How to Get More Doula Clients Through Provider Referrals
At some point in your doula work, you realize something frustrating.
You can be an incredible doula. You can care deeply, show up fully, support your clients beautifully… and still feel like you’re constantly chasing your next booking. Behind the scenes, you’re still piecing together your schedule, wondering where the next inquiry is coming from, and hoping things stay consistent.
You can only post on Instagram so many times. You can tweak your website, update your packages, and talk about your services until you’re tired of hearing yourself explain it. And still, it can feel unpredictable.
Meanwhile, there are doulas who are always booked out and always getting referrals.
I’m going to let you in on a little secret: it’s not that they’re a better doula than you or even that they’re better at marketing. What they’re good at is building relationships. And furthermore, they’ve focused a good portion of their doula career building those relationships with reliable care providers who have a continual stream of pregnant patients or clients. And when those patients or clients are looking for a doula, the care provider will refer the one they know and have a genuine relationship with.
The reality is, most doulas are not huge social media influencers getting client after client from going viral on instagram. BUT, a huge percentage of doula bookings do come from referrals from providers your clients already trust. OBs, midwives, pelvic floor therapists, chiropractors, lactation consultants… all the people your clients are already seeing and asking questions to.
When those providers know your name, understand your role, and trust how you support their patients, your business will start to garner attention and you’ll begin to feel the steadiness you crave.
Why Most Doulas Avoid Networking
If you aren’t used to professional networking, reaching out can feel awkward. You don’t want to sound like you’re asking for something. You don’t want to insert yourself into someone else’s practice in a way that feels forced. And if you’ve ever sent a message or email and didn’t hear back, it’s easy to take that as a sign to stop trying.
So you stay in your lane, focus on your clients, and hope referrals come naturally.
Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don’t.
But what would happen if you networked well?
What would it look like if the networking didn’t feel awkward or forced?
How would you feel if you have consistent referrals coming in from trusted sources?
When it’s done well, networking doesn’t feel like pitching yourself, but rather it feels like building real, professional relationships over time.
You’re not asking someone to send you clients right away. You’re introducing yourself, showing how you support families, and making it clear that you’re someone who adds value to the care team. You’re creating familiarity and trust so that when a provider has a patient who needs extra support, your name comes to mind without hesitation.
That kind of connection doesn’t happen from one email or one quick introduction. It comes from having a clear approach and following through in a way that feels genuine.
We Created a Doula Networking Workshop
We created this workshop because we kept seeing the same pattern. Doulas who are truly so very good at what they do, but stuck in a cycle of inconsistent inquiries and relying on effort-heavy marketing that doesn’t always pay off.
This workshop walks you through how to build relationships with care providers in a way that feels doable… not overwhelming, not salesy, and not something you have to overthink.
We go through how to identify the right providers to connect with, how to reach out in a way that feels natural, and how to build trust over time so those connections turn into real referrals. It’s structured, practical, and designed so you can take action right away instead of just sitting on the information.
Our Networking with Care Providers workshop includes an hour of video content along with tools to help you put the information into practice. That includes a budget tracking sample and worksheet so you can see how networking fits into your business, collaboration ideas so you’re not guessing how to build relationships, and a networking tracking spreadsheet to keep everything organized as you grow your connections. There’s also a preparation checklist to take the pressure off getting started, along with conversation starters and a questions guide so you’re not sitting there wondering what to say.
What Changes When You Network Consistently
When you start building relationships with care providers, your business will start to shift. You’ll no longer relying on people randomly finding you. Your name will being shared in conversations you’re not part of, and you’ll become someone providers trust to refer their patients to.
It will not happen overnight, but if you are consistent the momentum will build. And once it does, it creates a kind of consistency that’s hard to get any other way.
It’s easy to assume you need better marketing, more viral content, or a different strategy entirely. But for a lot of doulas, the missing piece is simply this side of the business that no one really taught you.
Learning how to connect with care providers in a clear, structured way fills that gap.
