7 Postpartum Doula Hacks for the First Month
I’m gonna be honest, the first month postpartum is a blur. It can leave you feeling off in ways you weren’t expecting. Maybe you’re exhausted even after a nap, frustrated that you can’t get the baby to settle, or just out of sync with your own body. Your days are full of feeding, diaper changes, and trying to remember if you’ve eaten or had water, and somehow it all feels heavier than it should.
I know that sounds overwhelming (and it can be), but there is hope. As a mama and a postpartum doula I’m here to share small, practical doula hacks that will hopefully make your first month postpartum a little more manageable.
1. Set Up One Spot and Stay There
You don’t need to be moving around your house all day. Pick one spot, usually the couch or your bed, and make it a cozy postpartum cove. Keep water, snacks, burp cloths, diapers, wipes, nipple cream, and your phone charger within reach. The less you have to get up and down, the more your body can rest between feeds. It seems simple, but it changes the rhythm of the day in a noticeable way.
2. Eat Before You Feel Starving
Postpartum hunger sneaks up on you, especially if you’re breastfeeding. By the time you feel starving, you’re already depleted, which makes everything feel harder—mood dips, patience disappears, and even feeding your baby can feel like a struggle. Keep real food nearby and eat early. Warm, hardy meals are nice, but even eggs, toast, or broth make a big difference. The goal isn’t perfect nutrition, but you do want to consume calories consistently for energy and mineral retention. Check out our favorite postpartum meals here.
3. Drink More Than You Think You Need
Most new parents underestimate how much hydration matters. Keep a large water bottle nearby and sip often, even if it feels unnecessary. Add minerals if you can. Staying hydrated benefits your energy levels, milk supply, and even your skin. It’s a simple habit that pays off in more ways than you might expect.
4. Lower the Bar on Everything Else
The fourth trimester (especially the first month) is not the time to keep up with normal routines. Laundry can wait. Dishes can wait. Emails can wait. You are healing and learning your baby, and that’s more than enough. Letting go of expectations doesn’t mean you’re slacking; it means you’re prioritizing what actually matters. If you are someone (like me) who likes things tidy, consider hiring the help of a doula or asking family to come by once a week to help you keep on top of household things.
5. Get Dressed, Even If It’s Simple
You don’t need anything fancy, but changing out of the same stretched-out leggings and tank top can shift your mood more than you think. Soft cotton, linen, or wool that feels good on your skin helps you feel a little more like yourself in the middle of an overwhelming season. Here are some of our favorite cozy outfits perfect for your postpartum body.
6. Expect Evenings to Be Harder
Evenings often bring cluster feeds, fussiness, and a sense that nothing will ever settle. Your energy is lower, your baby is often hungrier or needs more comfort, and your patience thinner. Knowing this ahead of time helps you meet it with a little more patience and less frustration. Simple things like dimming lights, keeping the space calm, and focusing on one thing at a time can make evenings feel less daunting.
7. Accept Help
If someone offers to hold the baby, bring food, or tidy up, let them. You don’t have to justify, organize, or explain every little thing. Allowing support without adding another layer of responsibility gives your body and mind a chance to rest and recover.
Thriving in the the first few months postpartum really is all about making small choices that help your days feel more manageable. Using these postpartum hacks can make your days feel a little lighter and help you feel more present with your baby.
